Froxfield and Privett Garden Club held its recent Summer Show at Froxfield Village Hall on 15 August. Despite the high temperatures and the lack of rain over the past few months there was a wide range of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Unsurprisingly, the total number of entries was significantly less than last year although it was only slightly below that for 2023 and 2024.
Chairman Elizabeth Houghton-Connell welcomed everyone and gave a brief resume of the club’s activities over the summer months. She complimented exhibitors on how well they have coped with the very difficult growing conditions.
The most popular classes were for Annuals and a single Dahlia. In the vegetables the small tomato class was the most popular. The flower arrangement classes provided a variety of entries. The large arrangements on the theme of ‘Summer Afternoon’ were the dominant feature of the end wall of the hall. The trophy for the best arrangement in the show went to Jan Cole for her arrangement in this class. This year the Banksian Medal for the most points over both our Spring and Summer Shows was won by Christine Stephens for the first time because of her wide range of entries in both shows.
This year Froxfield Primary School celebrated its 150th Anniversary. The pictures by the children on the theme of Your School showed many of the features of the school, not only its buildings but also the large tree and the hopscotch in the playground.
Many visitors, including local councillor Nick Drew who regularly supports our events, joined us to enjoy tea and cake whilst viewing the exhibits. As the Summer Show concluded Elizabeth took the opportunity to thank the exhibitors for producing outstan
Our new Garden Club year commences with the AGM on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at Privett Village Hall at 7.30pm. After the usual brief Club business meeting our speaker for the evening will be Kevin Hobbs who will be sharing his expertise on ‘The Story of Trees & how they change the way we live’ . Kevin Hobbs is a UK based professional grower and plantsman with over thirty years' experience in the horticulture industry. He is the author of ‘The Story of Trees and Herbaceous Perennials’. Kevin is an excellent speaker and the evening promises to be of great interest to all.
Our Membership subscription is £15 for the year, we host six meetings a year, a Spring Show and a Summer Show. We also hold an Open Garden event each year and organise trips to visit gardens of interest.
If you would like to join our friendly club, come along on 13 October and meet the Committee and our members. Guests and non-members are always very welcome at any event @ £5 per meeting.
